Customer Review #1:
Introducing young readers to how your body uses blood
"Oh, theres blood in your arms and legs,
lt;br /gt;Theres blood in your fingers and toes,
lt;br /gt;And once in a while when a game gets too rough,
lt;br /gt;Youll find that theres blood in your nose."
lt;br /gt;
lt;br /gt;Despite the vampire on the cover of "A Drop of Blood," this is not a horror story for kids but actually part of the Lets-Read-And-Find-Out Science 2 series. The point of Paul Showers book is to provide a simple introduction to the composition and functions of blood. If you are in grade school what that means is that this book explains to you how your body uses blood. However, if you are part of my generation then all you really need to know is that "A Drop of Blood" does for kids what the educational film "Hemo the Magnificent" did for us when we were that age (can you say, "sea water?").
lt;br /gt;
lt;br /gt;Despite the cute opening poem, printed in blood red lettering on a black background, "A Drop of Blood" begins by explaining how you can found out where blood is without cutting or bumping yourself. Showers covers why blood is red, how it moves through your body carrying oxygen and food, and what white cells, platelets, and fibrin do in your blood. I especially liked the simple explanation of how a scab forms. The vampire and his assistant help explain things, although I should point out that as a rule vampires cannot see themselves in a mirror and in a science book getting the rules about vampires wrong is something to be avoided. After all, this book is supposed to be educational.
lt;br /gt;
lt;br /gt;The back of them book provides some more facts about blood (e.g., the heart contracts 100,000 times a day), a list of ways to make sure your heart stays healthy (e.g, dont smoke!), and some places to read more about blood, the heart, and how to be healthy and strong. The illustrations by Edward Miller in "A Drop of Blood" were created using a computer, which I mention not only because the book points this out but because I figure we must be getting close to the point where most kids will be able to do something like this on their home computers for school reports. Other books in this series included "Hear Your Heart," "Why I Sneeze, Shiver, Hiccup, and Yawn," and what is certainly to be a favorite with kids, "What Happens to a Hamburger?"

Customer Review #2:
EDUCATIONAL AND INFORMATIVE
I bought this book for my second grade nephew and I think that it is very educational and informative. It states interesting facts about blood, and how important it is to the body. I think that the illustrations are colorful and cute. I love these Read and Find Out Science books for second and third graders. Appropriate for them at a level where they could understand about science. Contains lots of vital information.
