Sometimes you find a friend when you least expect it

Sometimes you find a friend when you least expect it. India Opal Buloni certainly isnt expecting to find a friend at the grocery store, especially not one of the canine variety. Winn-Dixie, name after the place where he and Opal first meet, seems to need a friend almost as much as Opal does, a fact that does not escape Opals preacher father when Opal introduces Winn-Dixie to him as a "Less Fortunate". lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;Opal and her father are new in town and Opals loneliness causes her to start wondering more about why her mother deserted their family seven years ago, when Opal was only three. After talking it over with Winn-Dixie, Opal gathers her courage and asks her father to tell her ten things about her mother. Opal uses this new information to strengthen her own sense of identity, which in turn helps her to gain the confidence she needs to make new friends. With each new friend Opal makes, she becomes less defensive, more confident and more empathetic. By the end of the book she is getting to know several children that she initially rejected, primarily because she expected them to reject her if given the chance. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;Character development and setting are both strengths of this novel. The eclectic dialogue keeps the Deep South setting at the forefront of the readers mind. One can almost hear each line spoken with a Southern twang. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;All of the characters are truly multidimensional. Nobody is perfect and nobody is evil. Particularly refreshing is the absence of the popular mean kids that seem to be stock characters in so many middle school books. Even though Opal is sure the Dewberry Brothers are picking on her, it turns out they just have a funny way of showing they want to be friends. When Opal discovers that seemingly stuck-up Amanda Wilkinson understands all too well what it is like to lose someone you love, she learns an important lesson about judging others and second chances.
