Definitely Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries) > Customer Review #1:
Boring

I really look forward to this series. Her characters are ones that I find have "personality" or at least developed some over the series. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;However, this book was just plain boring. The story didnt go anywhere at all. The whole missing braclet -- she didnt explain to the reader what was going on when she found it -- she told Quinn but we couldnt read about it for 40 more pages until she went to the reception. I found the whole vampire reception confusing. More back story should have been provided. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;I believe that even the author felt that this wasnt the best -- the last paragraph of the book sums up all the untold plots and story lines that were not covered. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;And, the very last page of the book encourages us to read something else for a change of pace. Perhaps this author is just burned out on these characters. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;If you are on the fence, dont even bother reading this one in the series. You missed nothing of any importance in Sookies life.

Harris does it again!

Sookie Stackhouse is once again off on new adventures. I love this author, this series, and the this latest book just proves that Ms. Harris is an accomplished storyteller. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;Sookie is a wonderful character that I found myself rooting for throughout the book, her down to earth personality, and folksy wisdom make for a charming heroine. Her love life remains an interest without becoming the focus of the book, and the innovative vampire/were world just keeps getting better. Dont start this book if you have to go to work(or to sleep)...I couldnt put it down.

A bit better than the last, but . . .

The good news is that at almost 400 pages, this is the longest installment of Harris series yet. The bad news is that the first 100 pages could likely be whittled down to about 3 paragraphs of exposition. lt;br /gt;The story doesnt really get started until Sookie starts going to the dogs (the weres) with a new love interest, and gets tangled in pack politics as she once was with the vamps. The old Sookie is back, giving better than she gets, and theres some interesting new characters; but in some ways, this series seems a bit adrift to me. Everybody in the supe world wants a piece of Sookie, but so much of it seems pointless filler that meanders among every possible group: weres, shifters, vamps and now a new little group I wont mention. I find myself wishing that Sookie would have a convention in her front yard, tell off the ones she wants quit of, get on with her life and focus on a good tight story here. lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;That said, Sookie is one of the most likeable heroines in supernatural (or romance) fiction; she has courage and an honesty and charm that is undeniably attractive, and it looks now as if there is a movie in the works about this series, which I look forward to. The earlier books (1,2 and 3) were great, and together they make a fine series. Its getting a little annoying that Harris likes to put her through her paces having to face this, that and the other ex-boyfriend, fix her brothers interminable problems and dance around possible suitors, rejected suitors, and current ones. The girl (and the reader) is a bit overburdened here, although I think its ultimately worth the ride.
