Kings best characters yet
I used to have the luxury of reading Stephen Kings books in order, as they were released. He got faster, I got slower, who knows--stuff happens. This is all in explanation of why I just read Desperation. As usual for me, I liked the story, but loved the characters. I guess Im not truly a horror fan. I read King for the realistic people and how they react in his "what would happen if..." situations. Typical of Kings sharp timing, Desperation had excellent tension and suspense. It also had my all-time favorite King character--Johnny Marinville. This has-been author (Marinville, not King) with not much more than his sense of humor intact, takes us on the ultimate redemption trip. I dont mind that these stories usually wind up as a classic tale of good vs. evil, I just dont want the ending too simple or predictable. Desperation kept me guessing until the last 50 pages or so. It made me wish Johnny Marinvilles travels could continue on--into other books.

God is cruel!
Whoa! This is the masterpiece, combined with The Regulators. This book is just monumental, along with The Stand, It and Needful Things. They are currently producing the movie and I cant just wait until the DVD goes for the market. Imagine Stephen King on vacation, going to the West Coast. Driving through a deserted vilage in Nevada, his brain immediately produces the mayhem that resulted in extermination of virtually all inhabitants of the mine-town. The narration is "plastic" - King put a lot of effort to enable readers to visualize the desert environment and dust of sun-blasted Nevada. Personally, I would prefer to be in North Greenland, than in Nevada. Nevertheless, even such a polar-bear as me found it convincing. I only wish that King had put the extended and juicy story of the mayhem. The novel is about God and His cruelty. Another example of phisolophical stigma that is present in Kings recent writings. Why do innocent ones have to suffer? Why those, who seemingly less deserve to survive, eventually end up well and those who have never hurt a fly and had always been good-natured folks - have to die without warning or purpose? God is cruel. So are we. Havent we been created in his image?

Deja Vu all over again
Desperation is very good Stephen King that builds a sense of peril and has the readers turning page after page well after they were supposed to turn the lights out. However, the biggest surprise and pleasure is reading it with the Bachman (King) book The Regulators. It is such a weird deja vu experience having character you think you know in both books. Heros relegated to more minor roles and events playing out differently then you think they will because of your preconceptions. Overall a very enjoyable experience.
